When we think about damage, we generally believe damage only happens when we get our hair done in the salon, but the truth is most of the damage to our hair happens outside of the salon and in our everyday lives.

Brushing your hair
Did you know that something as simple as brushing your hair can cause breakage? So why do we brush our hair? Tangles, of course! No matter your hair type, tangles happen. It doesn’t matter if you have thick curly hair or fine, straight hair; tangles are apart of our lives.
I always encourage my clients to detangle their hair before they even get in the shower using the right detangling brush. That way, when you are in the shower and brushing your conditioner throughout your hair, you aren’t stressing out your wet hair. It’s not like we can hear our hair breaking when we are brushing it, but it is happening. Even brushing your hair when it’s dry or brushing it to put it into a particular hairstyle can cause some breakage.
HEAT

That dreaded H-word. We all do it. Maybe some more than others. For those who use heat on a more regular basis, our hair maybe a little more damaged than those of us who don’t. Believe it or not, using excessive heat on your hair can be worse than color or chemical services done in a salon. Using heat on our hair, especially high heat, will essentially cook your hair. It will also cause your color to fade, your hair to dry out and become brittle and eventually break off. For my clients and me, Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil is ALWAYS right there with me. Olaplex No. 7 Bonding Oil will protect your hair from heat up to 450 degrees F.
Should your flat iron or curling iron ever be that hot? Um...No. But with Olaplex’s bond-building technology, you have a shield of protection for those days when you decide to use heat.

Sleeping
Now this one I didn’t figure out until recently. Your hair is rubbing on your sheets and pillows as you sleep, causing unnecessary friction, which causes breakage. Using a silk or satin pillowcase will not only keep your hair from breaking, but it will also help your skin breathe! Cotton pillowcases are out, and silk pillowcases are in! Even if you do nothing else in your hair care routine, switching out your pillowcases can be a game-changer!

Ponytails and Buns
Like your ponytails nice and tight? If you’ve been wearing your hair slicked back in a tight ponytail or bun, you have probably noticed your hair is thinning around the front (enter a picture of Stevie Wonder here). It’s not just tight ponytails causing your hair to thin out. Bobby pins, elastic hair ties, and even clips can all damage your hair. I know we want our hair to look as perfect as possible, but sometimes less is more! Be gentle with your hair when wearing it up. The healthier your hair is, the more perfect it will look in those cute styles.

Sun, Salt & Chlorine
Taking our health seriously is very important. Working out, swimming, spending time outside is great for our bodies but not so great for our hair. Summer and Winter are usually the harshed on our hair. During the summer, we may find ourselves feeling like we need to wash our hair more often because we feel sweaty, especially after a good workout or a day out in the sun. With Winter, it’s the wind and dry air that beat up our hair. UV damage doesn’t just happen to our skin. Our hair also becomes dry and damaged. And who doesn’t love a good dip in the pool? If you’re a regular in the pool, chlorine can and most likely will turn those blonde locks brassy or green and cause your hair color to fade pretty quickly.
So what’s a girl to do?
Use my favorites, of course!
